Civic Languages 2050 / Langues civiques 2050

About

Where will our languages be in 2050? Will more countries be officially bilingual and multilingual, or will their leaders suddenly declare them monolingual, against all evidence? How will the actual language realities in society correspond with these official stances, and how will educational institutions promote or deny those realities? 2050 is only a few short years away, and current trends and conflicts around language(s) suggest these questions are more complex and consequential than ever. Led by Professors David Gramling and Ervin Malakaj, Initiative Civic Languages / Langues civiques 2050 aims to understand the policy implications of today’s interweaving challenges around language(s): from Artificial Intelligence to additional language teaching to authoritarianism and the politics of scarcity, and how they will shape the social and policy landscape in the coming three decades.
